Dr Chris Oughton

Chris Oughton’s career spans local government and senior private sector roles, giving him a deep understanding of public service, governance, and strategic business management. Along the way, he’s paired hands-on experience in business development and corporate change with tertiary education, creating a well-rounded foundation for tackling big-picture challenges.

As CEO of the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) from 2007 to March 2024, Chris became a key player in addressing industrial sector challenges, especially in fostering collaboration on decarbonisation efforts. His innovative KIC4 framework for evaluating industrial precincts has driven thought leadership in the field, culminating in several published papers (links below) and forming the foundation of his PhD in Sustainable Engineering.

IN THIS SHOW:

1.The Birth of the Western Trade Coast

Dr. Oughton shares the story of how the Western Trade Coast began, starting with BP’s refinery in 1956. Over the next few decades, major players like Alcoa, CSBP, and Coburn Cement joined, turning the region into an industrial hub. Like a shopping centre with anchor tenants, these industries attracted a thriving network of support businesses that still operate today.

2.Emerging Industries and Innovation

From battery minerals to waste-to-energy projects, the Western Trade Coast is evolving rapidly. Dr. Oughton highlights groundbreaking developments like lithium hydroxide refineries, high-purity alumina plants, and the first waste-to-energy facility in Australia. These innovations are positioning the region as a leader in sustainable, future-focused industries.

3.Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

As the Western Trade Coast grows, so do its challenges. Chris discusses the need for infrastructure upgrades, including rail and road improvements, to meet increasing demand. He also shares his vision for balancing industrial expansion with sustainability, ensuring the region remains a key driver of WA’s economy for decades to come.
